DMT
Dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) is a white, crystalline solid of unusual purity at room temperature.
This ester of the para-positioned dibasic acid provides a form that reacts readily and is easy to handle. Because of these features DMT is the principal raw material for the polyester fiber and film industries. This unique Hercules-Witten process, now being practiced by INVISTAâ„¢, is the most widely used process in the world for the manufacture of DMT. This process assures complete freedom from halogens, nitrogenous bodies, and metallic contaminants arising from corrosion of process equipment.
Solubility
Solubility of DMT in common solvents is possible only at elevated temperatures. It can be crystallized from methanol or chloroform, but temperatures near its melting point are required for appreciable solubility in most other solvents. Above its melting point, solubility is excellent and contributes to its ready reactivity.
