Dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) is a white, crystalline solid of unusual purity at room temperature.
This ester of the para-positioned dibasic acid provides a form that reacts readily. Because of these features DMT can be used in the production of polyester fiber and film industries and polybutylene terephthalate. This process assures complete freedom from halogens, nitrogenous bodies, and metallic contaminants arising from corrosion of process equipment.
Solubility of DMT in common solvents is possible only at elevated temperatures. It can be crystallized from methanol or chloroform, but temperatures near its melting point are required for appreciable solubility in most other solvents. Above its melting point, solubility is excellent and contributes to its ready reactivity.
DMT (Dimethyl Terephthalate) produced by INVISTA is an industrial chemical used only in the production of polyester, polybutylene terephthalate, and non-orthophthalate plasticizers.
