Applications
Typical uses of DMT:
Reactivity takes place readily with a host of glycols, alcohols, and amines, or mixtures of these reactants. Alcoholysis proceeds easily under milder conditions than does esterification of terephthalic acid. The alcoholysis product of DMT and ethylene glycol is polymerized to polyethylene terephthalate, which leads to fibers, films, and blown bottles with high melting points, excellent clarity and great strength.
Derivatives of DMT also find widespread use in polyester wire enamels and insulating varnishes, unsaturated polyester, hot-melt adhesives, polyester coatings, engineering resins, temperature resistant alkyd resins, additives for specialty greases, and textile-dyeing aids.
